Does anyone know when the custom of shaving facial hair began? What culture started it, and why?

yeah it was the egyiptians! They pretty much started every thing that has to do with beauty and grooming. They started it to spesify classes so the slaves and the lower class people would have to shave there faqcial hair to distinguish which class they were in, they also distinguished with dying peoples hair diffrent colors.

I have no idea who were the first to shave, but I do know that Alexander of Macedon, otherwise known as Alexander the Great, ordered is army to keep their faces clean-shaven so that when in battle their enemies would not yank their faces down onto a sword point, or set them on fire.

I don't know where it first began, but the Roman legionaires were required to shave and cut their hair short. The reason: A beard, mustache, or long hair gave your opponent something to grab.

Even in today's armed forces, military keep the tradition of having short hair and no beards except in Navy/Coast Guard.
